Former Pakistani leader, Pervez Musharraf, currently faces charges for the 2007 assassination of Benazir Bhutto at a campaign rally in the city of Rawalpindi.

Pervez Musharraf ruled Pakistan for nine years after seizing power from Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif in 1999. Musharraf recently returned to Pakistan to seek re-election after his fall from power in 2008, but instead faced mockery from his political rivals and allegations reintroduced from his time in rule, says BBC News .

Benazir Bhutto was killed at a 2007 campaign rally in Rawalpindi after serving twice already as elected prime minister. Her assassination prompted massive support for the Pakistan People’s Party and her husband went on to become elected prime minister.

While allegations against a former Pakistani leader symbolize an end to an era of military immunity, there is little chance Musharraf will be convicted due to evidence obfuscation and the death of key witnesses.

The NY Times quotes Heraldo Muñoz, the diplomat who led the United Nations investigation, “The police deliberately botched the investigation into Bhutto’s assassination.”

Two police officers face charges for hosing down the Bhutto crime scene just hours after her assassination.

The next hearing is planned for August 27. Mr. Musharraf is not expected to appear.
