If you’re looking to go to the movies this weekend but are unimpressed by Getaway or the One Direction movie, Paramount has an answer. The studio announced Tuesday that it will release a double bill of its two biggest summer blockbusters - World War Z and Star Trek Into Darkness - in theaters this weekend.
Paramount set up a special site at UltimateDoubleFeature.com to advertize the event, which will run from Friday, Aug. 30 to Thursday, Sept. 5. The caveat is that it costs the same price as one ticket.
Star Trek Into Darkness has already grossed $227 million domestically since its May release and added $231 million internationally. The film hits Blu-ray on Sept. 10, so if you miss it this time, you won’t have to wait long before you can see it at home.
World War Z was the rare film this summer that overcame all the negative publicity surrounding its exploding budget and has grossed $500 million worldwide. The Brad Pitt-starring film is currently at $198 million domestically, so the double bill should help it reach an even $200 million, notes Slash Film. It hits Blu-ray on Sept. 17.
For the record, both films were co-written by Damon Lindelof. Into Darkness was directed by J.J. Abrams and World War Z by Marc Forster. AMC Theatres, Carmike Cinemas, Marcus Theatres and Regal Cinemas are participating in the double bill release.
