The man suspected of shooting and seriously injuring a Philadelphia police officer Tuesday has been arraigned Wednesday night after his release from the hospital.
Edward Davies, a 25th district officer and 6-year veteran, was confronting 31-year-old Eric Torres in a market in the Hunting Park section of the city around 12 p.m. Tuesday after Torres sped away from officers when he was pulled over earlier that day.
Torres allegedly put a revolver under Davies’ protective vest and shot him once in the abdomen. Other police officers were on the scene and Davies was rushed to Temple University Hospital, where he was immediately taken into surgery.
According to Officer.com Davies, 41, is in a medically-induced coma, has already had two surgeries, and may eventually lose a kidney. The police department wants anyone of it’s available officers to donate blood for Davies.
Davies’ wife, four children, fellow officers, and even Mayor Michael Nutter, have been keeping a vigil for the officer at the hospital.
"This incident plays out the day-to-day danger that our police officers face on a regular basis, gun violence, as well as our citizens," said Mayor Nutter, ABC reports.
Torres, who already has a record of 12 past arrests, will likely be charged with attempted murder, aggravated assault, and narcotics charges after heroin and a stolen gun were found inside his home.
