It’s been 17 years since Oscar winners Robert De Niro and Meryl Streep made a film together, but it looks like they have finally found the right material to reunite with. The two have signed on to co-star in The Good House.
The Good House was written by Ann Leary and centers on Hildy Good of Boston’s North Shore. She’s a successful real-estate broker, but with her daughters out of the house, she begins to drink - too much, according to her daughters. Hildy finds a friend in the young, wealthy Rebecca McCallister, who she hopes to protect from a scandal. Frank Getchell, an eccentric local, tries to keep Hildy from Rebecca, but it doesn’t work.
According to Deadline, the book has been acquired by FilmNation Entertainment, which will co-produce with De Niro’s Tribeca Productions. The book will be adapted by The Hours writer Michael Cunningham.
Indiewire notes that there hasn’t been a director signed on yet, but considering it’s a chance to direct two great actors, the producers will probably try to get a big name.
Streep and De Niro first starred together in the 1978 Best Picture winner The Deer Hunter and then reunited for 1984’s Falling In Love. They also starred in 1996’s Marvin’s Room together.
De Niro recently earned an Oscar nomination for Silver Linings Playbook, while Streep will be hoping to score yet another nomination for this year’s August: Osage County.
