Sony is planning on working with video game developer Ubisoft to make a film adaptation of Watch Dogs, a highly anticipated game that hasn’t even come out yet. Sony made the announcement on the same day that it said that the PlayStation 4 will hti stores on Nov. 15, with Watch Dogs available at launch.
According to Deadline, the film will be a collaboration between Ubisoft’s film unit, Sony Pictures Entertainment and New Regency. Ubisoft is also working with New Regency on film versions of Splinter Cell and Assassin’s Creed, which Michael Fassbender is starring in.
Variety reports that Watch Dogs centers on a hacker looking for revenge after a family tragedy. He hacks into Chicago’s Central Operating System, and takes control of the city’s infrastructure.
“The themes and open gameplay of Watch Dogs lends itself perfectly to the big screen,” Hannah Minghella, president of production for Columbia Pictures, said in a statement. “The game has intense action and adventure, but the story focuses on information and the control of information, which we think will lead to an exciting thriller. It has tremendous potential as a motion picture and we’re thrilled to have the opportunity to work closely with Ubisoft’s internal creative team on the development of the project.”
Sony made the announcement at the Gamescom event in Germany. According to USA Today, the company said that PlayStation 4 will launch on Nov. 15, with Watch Dogs and 32 other games available. It will carry a price tag of $399.
