Director Spike Jonze’s new film Her has been picked to have its world premiere at the New York Film Festival in October. The news comes a day after the film’s first trailer debuted.

Her stars Joaquin Phoenix and is set in a future where computer operating systems develop personalities. Phoenix’s character just got over a bad break up and he falls in love with is operating system, voiced by Scarlett Johansson. He also falls for a real woman, played by Amy Adams. Olivia Wilde, Rooney Mara and Chris Pratt also star.

“Like many people I’ve come to expect great and surprising things from Spike Jonze, but Her is something altogether new in cinema,” NYFF Director of Programming and Selection Committee Chair Kent Jones said in a statement. “To discuss even a little bit of the plot—let’s just say that it’s about lonely people and artificial intelligence—is to deprive first-time viewers of the opportunity of discovering it themselves. The tone is magical, the freedom of the narrative is breathtaking, Joaquin Phoenix continues to be one of the most adventurous actors in movies, Rooney Mara and Amy Adams are unforgettable, Scarlett Johansson’s voice will break your heart, and so will this impossibly delicate, funny, daring movie.”

Jonze said that he’s “very excited” to have the premiere in New York. The festival previously hosted the world premiere of his classic Being John Malkovich.

The NYFF will host the world premiere of Captain Phillips with Tom Hanks to open the festival on Sept. 27. Ben Stiller’s The Secret Life of Walter Mitty will be screened on Oct. 5. The festival closes with Her on Oct. 13. Her opens on Nov. 20.
