Taco Bell said this week that it will launch the Waffle Taco breakfast item nationwide after it scored success with it in Southern California.

The Waffle Taco is exactly what it sounds like - a waffle folded like a taco with sausage and scrambled eggs inside, plus a side of syrup.

According to The Associated Press, it was the top selling item during breakfast hours at five Southern California locations earlier this year. So, starting Thursday, customers will be able to buy it at 100 locations in Fresno, California, Chattanooga, Tennessee and Omaha, Nebraska. The expansion will not only help Taco Bell gauge the item’s popularity, but will also test the restaurants’ ability to take the added pressure of making waffles next to actual tacos.

“You only get one shot when you go with big items,” Brian Niccol, president of Taco Bell, told the AP.

This is the latest move from Taco Bell to try to break into the breakfast market, notes The Christian Science Monitor. The company tried a “First Meal” menu in 10 states last year and executives have suggested that it may reach nationwide by next year. Other items might include the “AM Crunchwrap” - a fried tortilla with scrambled eggs, hash browns and bacon or sausage.

The company also struck gold with Doritos Locos Tacos, which has lifted Taco Bell and forced other restaurant chains to come up with other wild ideas.

With the Waffle Taco set to go, we can only say: your move, Dunkin’ Donuts and McDonald’s.
