The Telluride Film Festival is always the wildcard of the major fall film festivals leading up to the awards season, since organizers don’t announce the lineup until the day before the festival begins and they usually hide a few surprises. This year’s lineup includes many of the year’s highly anticipated releases.
The 40th edition of the festival will feature the Palme D’Or winner from the Cannes Film Festival, Abdellatif Kechiche’s Blue Is The Warmest Color, along with Alfonso Cuaron’s Gravity. Cuaron’s film just premiered at the Venice Film Festival, which starts today.
Other awards favorites that Telluride attendees will get to see includes Alexander Payne’s Nebraska and Inside Llewyn Davis from the Coen Brothers. J.C. Chandor’s All Is Lost,a one-man show for Robert Redford, will also be screened. Ralph Fiennes’ next directorial effort The Invisible Woman was also included.
Telluride has hosted the world premieres for many of the most recent Best Picture Oscar winners, including Slumdog Millionaire, The King’s Speech and last year’s Argo.
“It's incredibly fortunate that we're just really lucky that way,” festival co-director Julie Huntsinger told The LA Times.
You can check out the full list of 59 features and shorts at TellurideFilmFestival.org. However, there will likely be a surprise “sneak preview” of at least one film. As the LA Times notes, that could be a great slot to premiere 12 Years A Slave, the new film from director Steve McQueen.
The festival starts tomorrow and runs until Sept. 2.
