Russia is responding with a message of its own after President Obama cancelled a meeting with Russia's Vladimir Putin just a day ago.
BBC reports that Russian analysts have printed in newspapers that Obama’s decision means that ties between Russia and the US will continue to deteriorate further, and Russia granting asylum to Edward Snowden is not the only reason for this souring of relations.
Obama and Putin never had as strong a relationship as former President George W. Bush and Putin did, and while a friendly relationship between the current leaders of the US and Russia may not have made Obama decide against cancelling his visit to Moscow all together, according to Reuters, it would definitely have helped.
While many are upset with Obama’s decision, others, especially the anti-Putin demographic, support it. TIME reports that former world class chess champion and anti-Putin leader Garry Kasparov stated that Putin’s joint appearances with leaders like Obama served to present him as their equals, and that the cancellation was a “welcome start.”
