A third X-Files film may be on the way and series creator Chris Carter wants Simon Pegg involved, proving two things once again: in Hollywood, some wells never dry out and Simon Pegg is becoming the Dwayne Johnson of genre films.
According to ComingSoon.net, Carter told Empire Magazine in an interview that he would like to revisit the show's "mytharc" of alien abduction and colonization.
"I have an idea for a third movie in my head," Carter said. "The colonization date has passed and that is something we wouldn't ignore. For the second movie, we only had the budget for a standalone story, but we want to go back to the mythology."
The decision lies with the owners' of The X-Files property - 20th Century Fox. Their hesitation is not surprising however, given the franchise's age (the show ran from 1993 to 2002 with films in 1998 and 2008) and the second film's disappointing box office numbers ($68 million worldwide over a $30 million budget, according to Box Office Mojo).
Meanwhile, Pegg is well-known for his British genre comedies often in collaboration with director Edgar Wright. He previously joined the rejuvenated Mission: Impossible and Star Trek franchises to much success.
"Gillian [Anderson, who plays co-lead Dana Scully] worked with Simon Pegg on a movie and told me that he was a big fan," Carter said. "We actually thought about putting him in the second movie, but there was no part for him. I certainly would think about him if we were to go forward in any way."
Should there be a third X-Files film? If so, who should Simon Pegg play? Let us know in the comments!
