A young Indian photojournalist was gang raped in Mumbai, reminding India of previous gang rape cases that have shocked the country and the world.
According to the Associated Press, police said Friday that the 22-year-old woman was raped while a male colleague was tied up and beaten. She was attacked in the overgrown city of Mumbai, where luxury buildings stand beside slums.
She and her colleague were working for a magazine and scouting an isolated area to shoot for the project. Around 7 p.m., men approached them, offering to get her an OK to photograph the buildings. But then they became aggressive when they accused her colleague of being a local criminal.
“We have made one arrest so far, but all the accused have been identified," Mumbai police commissioner, Satyapal Singh, said, reports CNN. He said that there were five men involved in the gang rape. Singh did not go into further details of the incident and did not reveal the woman’s name or who she was working for.
Singh provided sketches of the men and said that police have a “strong lead” in their search for them.
This is the latest incident of sexual violence in India, as the issue becomes a growing concern. The December gang rape of a 23-year-old woman on a New Delhi bus drew international attention to the issue and sparked debates about gender inequality in India.
Earlier this month, there was a shocking case in which a 7-year-old girl was raped in a train bathroom.
