The current Broadway revival of Annie is closing its doors in January. Despite the show’s popularity, it has seen ticket sales decrease recently and the producers announced Thursday when the production will end its run.

The New York Times reports that the Palace Theater will host Annie’s final show on Jan. 5, 2014. At that point, the show will have finished with 38 preview shows and 487 performances.

As BroadwayWorld notes, the show’s authors - Thomas Meehan (book), Charles Strouse (music) and Martin Charnin (lyrics) - won Tony Awards in 1977 for the show. The current production received lukewarm reviews and was only nominated for one Tony for best musical revival.

Still, producers plan on taking it on the road with a national tour set for 2014-2015.

Annie cost its producers $12 million. The Times asked if the closing date will help the producers recoup that. “That is still to be determined,” a spokesperson said.

The revival featured Lilla Crawford as the little orphan Annie. Sony is working on a film version that will be produced by Jay Z and Will Smith, with Quvenzhane Wallis, Jamie Foxx and Cameron Diaz. It will be released on Christmas Day 2014.
