Andres Muschietti, who directed the surprising January horror hit Mama, is reportedly in talks to direct Universal's long-gestating Mummy reboot.
Sources for The Hollywood Reporter and TheWrap confirmed today that Muschietti is speaking with the studio, which released Mama in January.
The Spanish director is considered a protege of Guillermo Del Toro, who did produce Mama, Muschietti’s first English movie. The film starred Jessica Chastain and Game of Thrones’ Nikolaj Coster-Waldau. It grossed a stunning $146 million worldwide and only cost $15 million to make.
Universal had hired Underworld’s Len Wiseman to helm The Mummy, but his packed schedule forced him to leave in late July.
The studio is going with a script by Jon Spaihts (Prometheus). Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci (Star Trek Into Darkness) are producing with Sean Daniels and plan on setting the new series in the modern world.
The Mummy was first brought to life by Boris Karloff in 1932 and turned into an adventure series for the Brendan Fraser-starring trilogy that began in 1999. Those films grossed $1.25 billion worldwide in total.
