Scarlett Johansson plays an alien in the upcoming film Under The Skin, but it only received a lukewarm reception from the audience at the Venice film festival.
According to Reuters, after the customary applause following the Under The Skin pres screening, boos could be heard. The movie is up for the Golden Lion at the film festival.
Reviews from various publications came in with plenty of negativity, with Variety saying it was ambitious film, but not much beneath the surface.
The Hollywood Reporter noted that director Jonathan Glazer was interested in the book that the movie is loosely based upon 10 years ago.
The Sexy Beast director said he thought it would be interesting to see “what it’s like for an alien to see our world.”
THR also panned the movie, echoing similarly to the Variety review that it’s a beautiful movie to watch, but lacks plot and feels pretentious, describing it similarly to David Cronenberg’s Cosmopolis.
Under The Skin is also dearth of dialogue, and THR notes, that much of what is actually said is tough to make out.
The Johnasson led film does not currently have a U.S. release date or distribution deal.
