One person was killed and 11 others were injured on Friday when a car came crashing into a building in Arizona.
Gilbert police said that an 87-year-old woman left a bank while running errands and hit a parked car in the parking lot of the Pima Medical Institute in southern Gilbert Friday morning, reports AZ Family. Her car then crashed through the front window of Spa Pima at the Institute, travelling about 25 feet inside the building.
Eight students and one instructor were inside a classroom, attending a massage therapy class, when the woman’s Infinity sedan crashed through the window, according to Institute president Mark Luebke.
11 were injured in the crash, according to ABC 15. Nine people suffered minor injuries, including the driver, and two others were brought to a nearby hospital with more serious injuries.
One of the students taking the class, 22-year-old massage therapy student Lacy Gruntorad, was killed.
“They were just sitting at tables looking at the chalkboard,” Luebke said in a statement, according to AZ Central. “They would have had no warning at all.”
Gilbert police said that there is no indication at this time of what caused the driver to crash into the Institute. The incident is still under investigation.
