A one-year-old Brooklyn boy was shot Sunday night and later died at the hospital police said. The bullet was reportedly meant for the boy’s father.
Antiq Hennis was in his stroller, with his parents by his side and just blocks from the family’s Riverdale Ave. home. The bullet pierced his head around 7:20 p.m., reports the New York Daily News. Antiq’s father was not hurt. The Daily News’ sources said that the father was the intended target.
The New York Times reports that Antiq was taken to the Brookdale University Hospital and Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.
“He was screaming ‘My baby got shot.’ He was going crazy,” Gina Gamboa, 22, told the Daily News, describing Antiq’s father after the shooting. “The baby was breathing, but his eyes were closed. It’s crazy. They just will start shooting.”
The Times notes that police did briefly close streets in the area, blocking people from going home.
Relatives and friends gathered at the family’s home, but would not speak with reporters late Sunday night. However, his uncle, Chris Dovsen, did speak with the New York Post.
“He was just starting to learn how to walk. He was just getting the hang of it. And now this happened,” Dovsen said. “Just yesterday he was playing with a basketball.” Dovsen added that Antiq’s father was a “changed man” after Antiq’s birth.
There were no other injuries reported and police haven’t made any arrests yet.
