Five were killed and one was injured Saturday morning in a single-car crash in Burbank, California.
Police released a statement saying that they believe that the Nissan was driving at a very high speed when it crashed at about 4 a.m. Saturday morning, the LA Times reports. The driver lost control of the speeding car, which sent it into a concrete pillar.
The car then burst into flames, trapping its passengers inside. Firefighters arrived on the scene to find the car completely engulfed in flames.
After dousing the flames, firefighters were able to pull five bodies from the car, which were “burned beyond recognition,” according to Burbank Fire Captain Peter Hendrickson. Fingerprints and dental records are reportedly what will be used to identify the deceased passengers.
One 18-year-old woman survived the crash after she was able to escape the vehicle by crawling out of it. The Burbank Leader reports that she suffered only a broken leg and other minor injuries, and she was taken to the USC Medical Center for treatment.
Burbank police believe that speed was a factor in the crash, but they are still conducting their investigation. They will also try to determine if drugs or alcohol were factors.
The names, ages, and genders of the victims have not been released, pending the identification of the deceased as well as the notification of their relatives.
