Adam Sandler is reportedly looking to try his hand at a more serious challenge. The funnyman is in talks to star in The Cobbler, an indie drama from acclaimed director Tom McCarthy.

The Hollywood Reporter first reported the news today. McCarthy has directed the films The Visitor and The Station Agent and was looking to make Spotlight, a film about the Boston Catholic Church abuse scandal. That has been put on the back burner since it is now in search of a new studio.

McCarthy, who most recently made Win Win, is looking to make The Cobbler for around $10 million and will be produced by Mary Jane Skalski.

THR noted that the plot is mostly unknown, but it is supposed to tell the story of a shoe maker who can actually experience the lives of the people whose shoes he fixes.

It appears that Sandler is looking for a change of pace after the back-to-back critical failures of Grown Ups 2 and That’s My Boy. Earlier this month, it was reported that Up In The Air director Jason Reitman was looking to cast Sandler in his next film, Men, Women & Children.

Sandler is currently working on The Familymoon with his Wedding Singer co-star Drew Barrymore.
