An admitted rapist and former high school teacher from Montana was released from prison today after being sentenced to only 30 days in prison.
Stacey Rambold, 54, raped his 14-year-old student Cherice Moralez in 2007. After allegedly feeling guilty for speaking out and being shunned by fellow students, Moralez committed suicide in 2010 soon after her 17th birthday.
District Judge G. Todd Baugh sentenced Rambold last month to 31 days at Montana State Prison followed by probation for the next 14 years and 11 months. The case drew national attention after Baugh made unfair comments about Moralez and later tried to apologize.
"I made some really stupid remarks,” Baugh said, CBS reports. “It didn't come out right and I owe the whole county, but maybe even the whole country, especially women, an apology."
According to CNN prosecutors are appealing the sentence and saying it is illegal. Baugh has been banned from the case.
The National Organization for Women filed a complaint with a judicial review board and have gotten over 140,000 people to sign petitions.
