Students and faculty members at the University of Alabama have taken a stand against racial segregation at their school this week after the campus newspaper quoted a member of an all-white sorority say that her chapter had considered race as a factor when choosing new members earlier this year.
According to New York Times the campus newspaper called The Crimson White published a quote from Melanie Gotz, a member of an all-white sorority Alpha Gamma Delta. In the account, she spoke about alumni and racial influences and how they affected their selection of new members.
A week after, hundreds of students and faculty marched and held signs near the President’s Mansion in protest of racial segregation at the university.
The Republic reports that this year marks the 50th anniversary of the university’s racial integration. In 1963, the university admitted it’s first few black students.
Fifty years later, faculty and some students are still working to end the problem of racial segregation in the Greek Life system for good.
