Mayor Stubbs of Talkeetna, Alaska was attacked by a dog. Of course, Stubbs is actually a cat and it’s only an honorary position, but the townspeople are still angry.

The attack left Stubbs, who has lead the town 110 miles north of Anchorage for 16 years, with a punctured lung, a 5-inch gash and a fractured sternum, reports CNN. He was attacked over the weekend and doctors took out a breathing tube on Tuesday. He did survive the attack and is breathing on his own.

“It's a shame,” pizza shop owner Ashley Kearns told CNN. “He's the mayor, it's not a joke. I know it's ridiculous, but the town is run really well.”

Lauri Stec owns Stubbs and spoke with ABC News, noting that he will still be in the hospital for awhile. “His injuries were pretty bad,” she said. “He’s doing well. He’s on heavy medication for pain. The next few days are crucial...He’s holding his own.”

Talkeetna is a “historical district,” which means that the mayor’s office is an honorary post without political power. The town is home to 800 humans, who voted in Stubbs as a write-in candidate. His office is Stec’s general store.

The attack occurred on Saturday while Stubbs was just doing his usual town inspection. An unleashed dog ran across the street and bit poor Stubbs.

stec said that the medical bill may reach $2,000. She told ABC News that she has received donations from all around the world and will donate the extra money to the animal shelter in Palmer, Alaska.

We wish Stubbs a quick recovery.
