Katy Perry reveals that Barbara Walters reprimanded her when she was late for an interview with the veteran journalist.
“I shouldn’t have done the interview. I was playing Madison Square Garden that same night, and I knew that the end of my marriage was coming. I was just exhausted and stressed,” Perry said in an interview with Billboard.
Perry says she told Walters’ team that she’d be late, but The View co-host arrived at their originally scheduled time. Once Perry finally showed up, Walters had a few choice words for the pop star.
“She said to me, ‘You know, I’ve only ever waited for one other person this long, and you know who that person was? Judy Garland. You know how she turned out, right?’” Perry said.
Despite the lecture, the “Roar” singer actually thought it was cool to be chastised by Walters. She adds that she didn’t want to keep Walters waiting, but couldn’t explain the true reason for her tardiness.
“I just couldn’t tell her as we were sitting down for a mega-interview, ‘Hey, my marriage is falling apart. Give me a break,’” Perry said.
Although Perry doesn’t identify which interview it was, People speculates it could be her segment in Barbara Walters’ 10 Most Fascinating People from 2011. The interview aired a month after Perry’s concert at Madison Square Garden and two weeks before her divorce went public.
