Benedict Cumberbatch may star in The Lost City of Z, a project Brad Pitt has been trying to get off the ground for years. Meanwhile, the British actor is going to be honored by the British Film & Television Academy during the Britannia Awards in November.
The Lost city of Z is based on David Grann’s book and Brad Pitt had hoped to star. Instead, Cumberbatch will star and Pitt will produce under his Plan B banner, notes TheWrap. Co-producers include Dede Gardner, Jeremy Kleiner and Anthony Kataga and Panorama Media is co-financing.
Cumberbatch would likely play Percy Fawcett, a British colonial in the 1920s who goes on a search for a mythical city he thought he had already discovered.
This news follows his departure from Guillermo Del Toro’s Crimson Peak. That sparked rumors that he may reunite with his Star Trek Into Darkness director J.J. Abrams for Star Wars: Episode VII, but his rep denied that.
In other Cumberbatch news, the 12 Years A Slave actor will be honored by BAFTA during its Nov. 9 Britannia Awards in Los Angeles. He will receive the British Artist of the Year award for his work in 2013. George Clooney will also attend that ceremony, since he’s receiving the Stanley Kubrick Britannia Award for his career.
