Bill Murray is teaming up with Oscar winner Barry Levinson for Rock The Kasbah, a film that sounds like the perfect vehicle for the comedian. The project will be written by Mitch Glazer.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the project will be up for sale for distributors during the Toronto International Film Festival. The producers include QED’s Bill Block, Venture Forth’s Jacob Pechenik and Shangri-La Entertainment’s Steve Bing. QED will handle sales at the festival.

“Bill Murray and Barry Levinson are the perfect team to capture the lunacy, heartbreak and hope of this story. I’m ecstatic,” Glazer, who worked with Murray on 1988’s Scrooged, told Deadline.

Rock The Kasbah will provide Murray with a leading comedy part, following his performance in last year’s Hyde Park on the Hudson. He will play a music manager who takes his only client to Afghanistan on a USO tour. But he then loses his client and is stuck in the country. He then meets a young girl with an amazing voice, who joins him to go to Kabul so she can compete in a singing competition.

Levinson won his Oscar for directing Rain Man and is currently working on a Whitey Bulger movie called Black Mass that is without a star. THR’s report sounds as if that project has been abandoned.

Murray will next be seen in George Clooney’s The Monuments Men.
