E.L James announced casting news for the Fifty Shades of Grey film adaptation Monday and was met with a less than stellar responses. Now, Bret Easton Ellis, who has long criticized the films screenwriters Kelly Marcel, is speaking out saying that Charlie Humman was not the erotic novels authors first choice- Robert Pattinson was.
“Talked to E.L. James at a party over the summer: her first choice for Christian was Rob Pattinson and Matt Bomer was never in the running,” James tweeted Monday after the big news was revealed. Ellis also noted in his tweets that “Ian Somerhalder was never in the running” either.
In addition to announcing that Humman would play Christian Grey, James also pegged Dakota Johnson to play Anastasia Steele.
News of Johnson and Humman’s additions to the cast have not been well received, New York Daily News reports. The backlash became so much that one of the film’s producers, Dana Brunietti, took to Twitter to defend the casting choices.
“There is a lot that goes into casting that isn't just looks. Talent, availability, their desire to do it, chemistry with other actor, etc,” he tweeted. “So if your favorite wasn't cast, then it is most likely due to something on that list. Keep that in mind while hating and keep perspective."
Would you rather see Robert Pattinson over Humman?
