Actress Cate Blanchett has agreed to direct a film adaptation of the Herman Koch novel The Dinner. This will be the Oscar-winning actress’ debut as a director.

According to Deadline, Blanchett will direct from a script written by Oren Moverman, with Cotty Chubb producing under his ChubbCo banner. The executive producers will be Eva Maria Daniels and Olga Segura.

Variety reports that the plot centers on a dinner in Amsterdam between two brothers. One of the brothers is trying to become prime minister of the Netherlands, but has to deal with a teenage son’s horrible crime. The psychological thriller was published in 2008.

Blanchett is currently in the Oscar race for her performance in Woody Allen’s Blue Jasmine. Her next projects in front of the camera include Disney’s live-action Cinderella film as the evil stepmother and Todd Haynes’ Carol with Rooney Mara.

While this will be her first film as a director, she previously acted as co-artistic director for the Sydney Theater Company, notes Variety.
