You can cross one movie off your list for 2015. Disney has said that Pirates of the Caribbean 5 has been delayed and might not release the film until summer 2016.
Pirates 5 will again star Johnny Depp as Jack Sparrow and will be produced by Jerry Bruckheimer, but will likely feel very different from the previous four films since Norwegian directors Joachim Rønning and Espen Sandberg are guiding this ship. The duo directed the Oscar-nominated Kon-Tiki and recently revealed that the film will be subtitled Dead Man Tell No Tales.
Disney confirmed to Deadline that the film will be delayed, though. Sources for the site say that it is not because the production is in trouble as filming wasn’t scheduled to start until February and the script by Jeff Nathanson is only at the outline stage. They have decided not to rush the script and to let Rønning and Sandberg take their time.
While The Lone Ranger flopped this year, Disney does have time. Pirates is its biggest franchise, grossing over $3 billion worldwide. Plus, Marvel’s Ant Man is now being released in summer 2015 and Pixar’s Inside Out is due that season. Plus, Avengers 2 is set for May 2015 and the new Star Wars movie is also scheduled for 2015.
Depp is also keeping busy with two other Disney productions - the musical Into The Woods and Alice in Wonderland 2.
