Fans of the Bridget Jones series are taking to social media to vent their frustrations that author Helen Fielding has killed off Mark Darcy in the third book Mad About The Boy.

Renee Zellweger made the first two books popular in their film adaptations, and the third book is due out Oct. 10.

In an excerpt in the Sunday Times, it’s revealed that Jones and Darcy have two children together, and Darcy passed away five years earlier. She’s now a 51-year-old widow with a boyfriend in the new book.

Fans are taking to Twitter to vent their frustration, most of them saying they won’ watch the third film if Darcy isn’t in it.

The BBC notes the first Bridget Jones book Bridget Jones's Diary came out in 1996 and the sequel, Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason came out in 1999. The movie adaptations were released in 2001 and 2004, respectively.

Zellweger garnered an Oscar nod for her role in the first film but the second wasn't as critically well received.
