The highly-anticipated film adaptation of the steamy novel Fifty Shades of Grey finally announced the lead roles. Dakota Johnson, 23, and Charlie Hunnam, 33, are cast to play characters Anastasia Steele and Christian Grey.

The erotic romance focuses on the beautiful Christian Grey, a businessman and billionaire who gets involved in a S&M relationship with inexperienced and virginal college graduate and Anastasia.

After months of waiting, the novel's author E.L. James tweeted the news Monday morning, first revealing Johnson's role and soon after announcing Hunnam's part.

Dakota's previous roles include 21 Jump Street, The Five-Year Engagement and Need for Speed. Hunnam stars in the television drama Sons of Anarchy and also was also featured in Pacific Rim, Children of Men and Cold Mountain.

According to the Daily Mail, James' first choice for Christian Grey's character was Robert Pattinson.

The announcement further rules out actress choices and rumors such as Emma Watson, Shailene Woodle and Analeigh Tipton as well as actors Matt Bomer, Ian Somerhalder, Henry Cavill, Alex Pettyfer and Alexander Skarsgard, reports USA Today.

The film will be directed by Sam Taylor-Johnson and is set for a release date in August 2014.
