Former Florida football player, Jonathan A. Ferrell, was shot and killed by police officers in North Carolina on Saturday morning.

Officers were responding to a 911 call from a woman who was frightened by repeated knocking from a man at her door when Ferrell, who matched the woman’s description, ran towards the officers. North Carolina police officer, Randall Kerrick, fired repeatedly, killing Ferrell on the scene.

The Huffington Post . reports a wrecked car was found nearby, leading investigators to believe that Ferrell had gotten into an accident and was looking for help when he knocked on the woman’s door.

The police issued a statement stating, “The evidence revealed that Mr. Ferrell did advance on Officer Kerrick and the investigation showed that the subsequent shooting of Mr. Ferrell was excessive [...] Our investigation has shown that Officer Kerrick did not have a lawful right to discharge his weapon during this encounter,” reports CNN .

Kerrick turned himself in Saturday evening, and was released the next day on a $50,000 bond. He has been charged with voluntary manslaughter.
