20th Century Fox will release the a theatrical version of Mark Burnett and Rebecca Downey’s hugely successful miniseries The Bible. This version, running just over two hours, will focus on the segments about the life of Jesus Christ.
It shouldn’t be a surprise to see that Burnett and his wife, who co-produced with Burnett and played Mary, would pick Fox to distribute the film domestically. Deadline notes that Fox already distributes The Bible on home video. When it was released in April, it sold 525,000 copies in its first week.
According to Variety, the theatrical cut will run two hours and 15 minutes and will be titled Son of God. The studio is still working on a release date and they are still looking for an international distributor.
Son Of God will include the sequences from the 10-hour series that featured Jesus’ life from birth to the Resurrection. Portuguese actor Diogo Morgado played Jesus.
“While we appreciated the interest from other distributors, Fox was the right choice for us. This movie deserves a big studio behind it. We have crafted a powerful standalone movie that is a completely emotional, uplifting experience for audiences,” Burnett said.
Burnett, who created The Voice and Survivor, has been talking about a theatrical cut of The Bible since April. In July, NBC nabbed the follow-up series, A.D.: Beyond the Bible.
