The next stop for Gravity is the Toronto International Film Festival, which kicks off today. Warner Bros. released the first full trailer for the film before its screening there. It has not only impressed critics with its visuals and performances by George Clooney and Sandra Bullock, but even James Cameron loved it.
The trailer lasts two minutes and gives a preview of the incredible tension packed into the film’s shockingly short 90-minute runtime. Bullock is left to save herself from disaster and Clooney tries to talk her through it.
In an interview with Variety, Cameron, who is friends with director Alfonso Cuaron, praised the film. Cameron knows a thing or two about stunning visuals, having directed Avatar and Titanic. But he said that the “human dimension” was the most interesting part.
“What is interesting is the human dimension,” he told Variety. “Alfonso and Sandra working together to create an absolutely seamless portrayal of a woman fighting for her life in zero gravity.”
He added, “I was stunned, absolutely floored...I think it’s the best space photography ever done, I think it’s the best space film ever done, and it’s the movie I’ve been hungry to see for an awful long time.”
“Alfonso does not play it safe,” producer David Heyman explained. This is Heyman’s first project since the Harry Potter films wrapped. He worked with Cuaron on The Prisoner of Azkaban, which is widely considered the best Potter film.
In a chat with The Hollywood Reporter, Cuaron explained why he thanked Cameron during the film’s credits.
“This film was a miscalculation. There was not technology for what we were trying to achieve. But [Cameron] was a big champion,” he told THR. “He said, ‘Man, you're going to make this happen,’ and started giving me pointers. And we made it happen.”
