Angelina Jolie is getting started on Unbroken, her next film as director, and has already been on location in Australia for over a week. But the project is still gaining stars. Tron: Legacy actor Garrett Hedlund is the latest to join.
Variety first reported on Hedlund’s casting. The news comes just after it was revealed that he was considered for Fifty Shades of Grey, but the part went to Charlie Hunnam. Hedlund recently appeared in On The Road and will be seen in Joel Coen and Ethan Coen’s Inside Llewyn Davis this fall.
Speaking of the Coen Brothers, they worked on the latest draft of Unbroken and their long-time cinematographer, Roger Deakins, has just been assigned to the film. Previous drafts of the script were penned by William Nicholson and Richard LaGravenese.
Jolie arrived in Australia last week, where she plans on doing on location shooting for the film, which is based on the true story of a World War II pilot who survived alone in the Pacific after his plane crashed. It is based on Laura Hillenbrand’s book. It will star Jack O’Connell in the lead role of Lou Zamperini, who was an Olympian before the war.
Hedlund has been cast as another POW, Commander John Fitzgerald, reports THR. That site notes that the deal had been over a month in the works, but Hedlund had to arrange his schedule before committing.
Filming for Unbroken begins next month.
