HBO certainly likes to turn hot political topics into films and is looking to do that again with last year’s Benghazi terror attack. Behind the Candelabra producer Jerry Weintraub is executive producing a film based on a new book about the incident.
The film will be based on Under Fire: The Untold Story of the Attack in Benghazi, written by Fred Burton and Samuel M. Katz, reports The Hollywood Reporter.
Under Fire tells the story of the attack against the U.S. diplomatic outposts in Benghazi, Libya on Sept. 11, 2012. The attacks resulted in the deaths of four Americans, including U.S. Ambassador J. Christopher Stevens. According to TheWrap, the book goes minute-by-minute to track how the events unfolded, based on interviews with witnesses and anonymous sources in the intelligence community.
Under Fire became a New York Times Bestseller after it was published last month.
Weintraub has had a fruitful relationship with HBO, culminating in this year’s hit Liberace film Behind the Candelabra, which earned 15 Emmy nominations. His film credits include the Oceans trilogy, 2010’s Karate Kid and HBO’s 41 documentary on President George H.W. Bush. He’s also working on Showtime’s climate change documentary series Years of Living Dangerously.
