The latest Star Wars: Episode VII rumor claims that director J.J. Abrams may film at least part of the movie in IMAX.
The blog Ain’t It Cool News is reporting that IMAX CEO Richard Gelfond told a crowd at a Goldman Sachs conference that the company is talking with Abrams about at least doing some scenes with an IMAX camera. “We are talking to J.J. Abrams test now about the next Star Wars being used with partly IMAX cameras,” he is quoted as saying. (If you imagine that “test” is a typo and that he really said “the J.J. Abrams team,” it makes a little more sense.)
This tidbit of information is rather interesting, since it was reported last month that Abrams is working with his Star Trek cinematographer Dan Mindel for Star Wars, using traditional 35 mm film. The two filmed parts of Star Trek Into Darkness in IMAX, so they have experience in working with the large format. We’ve also heard from Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy that they are hoping to rely less on CGI for the movie (at least compared to the CGI-heavy prequels).
Disney still hasn’t confirmed any of the wild casting rumors that have been floating around in recent weeks, but we do know that Toy Story 3 writer Michael Arndt is working on the script. The film is expected to be out sometime in 2015 and there is speculation that it could be out in the winter, since Disney has several films, including Ant Man and Avengers 2 scheduled for summer 2015.
