Warner Bros. and J.K. Rowling have announced a Harry Potter spin-off is in the works.
According to USA Today, J.K. Rowling posted on her Facebook page, that she is in the process of writing a screenplay for a new movie. While the new film, Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, will not follow any of the Harry Potter trio, it will follow the fictional author Newt Scamander.
In the Harry Potter world, Scamander was a famous author of a textbook Harry Potter had to buy. His grandson, Rolf, married Potter’s friend Luna Lovegood.
The Los Angeles Times reports that this movie will be an extension to the Wizarding world and not a prequel to the movies or books.
“The laws and customs of the hidden magical society will be familiar to anyone who has read the Harry Potter books or seen the films, but Newt’s story will start in New York, 70 years before Harry’s gets underway,” Rowling said in a statement.
This film will be the first in a new franchise. Warner Bros. also plans to release a video game and other products based Scamander’s book.
