Labor Day was screened for critics and reporters ahead of its gala premiere at the Toronto Film Festival..
USA Today reports that the movie, directed by Jason Reitman, is based off of Joyce Maynard's novel.
The movie was previously screened at the Telluride Film Festival and early word has been fairly positive, but not exactly overwhelmingly so. Critics say the acting makes up for any missteps the movie makes.
The Hollywood Reporter's Todd McCarthy really enjoyed the film and the way Reitman (Up In The Air) keeps the film "from becoming corny, unduly melodramatic or obvious," though small moments strain credulity.
According to Gossip Center the film focuses on Kate Winslet, who plays an unhappy, single mother, who is suddenly stuck having to harbor a fugitive (played by Josh Brolin).
The Daily Beast reports that Reitman said that "It's a movie about inexplicable decisions ... a love story."
THR notes that the movie takes place in a small town in Massachusetts in 1987.
The movie sees a limited December release before a wider Jan. 31, 2014 opening.
