When the casting announcement came for the new Avengers film to cast James Spader as Ultron, the reception came back as positive, but a little confused. Spader, while being a veteran actor seemed like a bit of a left-field choice for such an iconic villain. Joss Whedon says that Spader was his first and only choice.

Whedon on Spader explains to Marvel that "He's got that hypnotic voice that can be eerily calm and compelling, but he's also very human and humorous. Ultron is not HAL. Spader can play all of the levels. He's the guy to break the Avengers into pieces." For those unfamiliar with the comic lore, Ultron is a criminally insane robot with super strength, agility, and intelligence. It sounds like the mighty Avengers may have their hands full both on and off the set with Spader.

Fans have warmly welcomed Spader as their new villain. According to Coming Soon over 65% voted that they love Spader or that they trust marvel in their casting decisions. What do you think, is James Spader an ideal choice for such an iconic villain?
