Katie Holmes has joined the Weinstein Company’s film adaptation of The Giver, which already stars Meryl Streep and Jeff Bridges. There is also a report that pop star Taylor Swift may also have a role in the film.
Streep joined the film last month. It will be directed by Phillip Noyce (Salt) and is based on the acclaimed novel by Lois Lowry. Bridges has been cast as the title character, an old man who gives memories to a young man who must use those memories to take down a utopian society, lead by Streep. Brenton Thwaites will play the young hero.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Holmes was cast as Thwaites’ character’s mother, who follows the strict laws of the society.
While THR doesn’t mention it, The New York Post’s Page Six is reporting that Swift has snagged a role in the film. Sources for the site said that Harvey Weinstein offered Swift a role after meeting her at the Toronto International Film Festival. She also became friends with Thwaites at the event.
“Harvey introduced Taylor to Brenton in Toronto because they were both going to be in the film,” the Post’s source said.
The Post reports that Swift’s contract has already been signed and the deal’s done.
Nikki Silver of Tonik Productions is producing with Bridges and Neil Koenigsberg. They are looking to make the film for around $25 million and will start production in South Africa. Streep’s parts will likely be completed in London, since she’s working on Disney’s Into The Woods.
