A man spotted a lion walking around in a Kuwait suburb Saturday, causing officials to suspect that lions and other wild animals are being kept as pets there.

According to Reuters, the lion was meandering around the streets of Kuwait's Bayan distric. The man who found him was able to lead the lion to his car and then called for police reinforcement.

"[The man] sat inside the car with the lion and then it became dangerous so the citizen called police who came and took it from that car to their car," said one police source.

MSN reports that the lion was transferred from the citizen's car to a police car, and then taken to a shelter where he will be evaluated.

Officials believe that the lion was kept as a pet by one of Kuwait's wealthier residents. Investigations are under way to determine who the owner of the lion was. Keeping a lion as a pet is extremely illegal, but is also seen as a symbol of elite status.
