23-year-old Daquan Breland was charged with second-degree murder of one-year-old Antiq Hennis. After pleading not guilty on Saturday, he was held without bail.
Hennis was shot in the head last weekend while being pushed across a Brooklyn street in a stroller. He was pronounced dead when he arrived at a hospital.
The bullet was allegedly intended for Antiq's father, Anthony Hennis. According to Fox News, the gun has not yet been located. Daquan Wright was arrested along with Breland and is waiting arraignment. Officials are proceeding with further investigation.
The Washington Post reports that the intent of the shooting is unknown and the toddler's father refuses to cooperate.
However, according to the National Post, the shooting could have been gang-related. Hennis is believed to be a member of the Crips street gang. He has been involved with the law several times, racking up 25 arrests for mostly drug-related reasons.
Breland is on parole from an armed assault incident in 2011 and Wright has an open arrest warrant in Brooklyn for criminal weapons possession.
Hundreds of people joined together Friday to remember Antiq at his funeral at the Grace Funeral Chapel in Ozone Park in Queens.
