White Collar star Matt Bomer may not be starring in Fifty Shades of Grey as many fans had hoped, but the actor has still landed a very interesting lead role. He will play 1950s matinee idol Montgomery Clift.
Reps for the actor confirmed the casting to Entertainment Tonight. The film will simply be titled Monty Clift and tells the story of his relationship with Elizabeth Taylor after they starred in George Stevens’ 1951 Oscar-winner A Place In The Sun. The film rocketed Clift to stardom and helped Taylor transition from child star to adult actress.
According to Deadline, the indie film will be financed by Pier 3 Pictures’ Michael Din, Janine Giaime and Juri Henley-Cohn. Christopher Lovick wrote the script and Larry Moss will direct. They hope to start shooting next year.
Clift was nominated for four Oscars and appeared in the Best Picture winner From Here To Eternity. At the height of his success, he was in a motorcycle accident, which left his good looks scared. He still continued making movies, appearing in Marilyn Monroe’s final film The Misfits. He died in 1966 at age 45.
As for Bomer, he currently stars in USA Network’s hit series White Collar and appeared in Magic Mike. His next project is Ryan Murphy’s HBO movie The Normal Heart.
