There might some Oscar buzz starting to surround Matthew McConaughey for his role in Dallas Buyers Club, but the actor doesn’t have his sights set on one.
He nearly 50 pounds to play the role of an AIDS activist, and he isn’t worried about an Academy Award, rather he’s more concerned that his character translated to audiences.
"There's nothing out there that I am chasing. I want my work to translate," he said, USA Today reports. "Last year was an incredibly creative year of work for me. It was also the first year I lost money. How about that? Make sure you (write) that I'm saying that with a grin. I'm looking for great experiences."
He will soon be seen in Martin Scorsese's The Wolf of Wall Street with Leonardo DiCaprio, and he’s gearing up to shoot Christopher Nolan’s Intersellar.
McConaughey also explained what drew him to the role in Dallas Buyers Club, which Jared Leto and Jennifer Garner also appears in, saying "It was told from a heterosexual's point of view, and there's no third-act turn where our protagonist finds God. No, you stick with this guy being a selfish businessman. He naturally becomes more accepting and understanding because he becomes an outcast."
The Hollywood Reporter notes Leto is also getting some Oscar buzz for his role as a transgender, but Garner’s role as a doctor is probably too small to get recognition from the Academy.
