Matthew McConaughey talked about his new movie and how he's not really chasing an Oscar.

The actor talked about how interesting Ron Woodroof was to play to USA Today. "It's just who he was, and you can empathize with him. You don't have to like him," he said of Woodroof.

The cowboy was known to be brash and homophobic before he was diagnosed with HIV, and he didn't change much after.

"There's no third-act turn where our protagonist finds God. No, you stick with this guy being a selfish businessman," he added. "He naturally becomes more accepting and understanding because he becomes an outcast."

When asked about the career turn around the actor has made, turning in critically respected turns in well-reviewed movies he said, "Last year was an incredibly creative year of work for me. It was also the first year I lost money. How about that? Make sure you (write) that I'm saying that with a grin. I'm looking for great experiences."

He admitted to hearing about the Oscar talk for his role as Woodroof, but said, "There's nothing out there that I am chasing. I want my work to translate."

He worked hard for the role in Buyers Club, both McConaughey and his co-star Jared Leto. They both lost about 40 pounds each for their roles.
