McDonald's has been struggling to keep sales up with their fast food competition lately, perhaps putting the Dollar Menu in danger. In an effort to make people spend more, the items on the Dollar Menu will no longer exclusively be sold for a dollar.
According to USA Today, the corporation is toying around with the idea of a Dollar Menu & More – featuring foods listed at $1, $2 and $5. Menu items could range from smaller items like single burgers to larger items such as deluxe burgers and 20-piece chicken McNuggets.
Restaurant researchers report that people just aren't spending as much as they used to on eating out. Over 10 years have passed since McDonald's originally introduced the Dollar Menu, but it seems that the times are changing.
Neil Golden, chief marketing officer, reports that the new Dollar menu will spread nationally and could even be incorporated later this year.
"While no official changes have been made to our current Dollar Menu, we continue to evaluate and test the best value options," Golden stated.
The idea of the Dollar Menu & More are currently being tested in the franchises in Fresno; Albuquerque; Columbia, S.C.; Hartford, Conn.; Springfield, Mass.; and Memphis, reports the Los Angeles Times.
McDonald's follows in Wendy's footsteps, as they altered their bargain menu earlier this year. Other retailers have increased their “deal” prices as well, including Trader Joe's “Two-Buck Chuck” being priced at $2.49 now in California stores.
