A new Broadway production of Cabaret has earned plenty of attention, as major actresses have been linked to the famous role of Sally Bowles. The latest is Oscar nominated actress Michelle Williams.
Theater blog Lemonwade.com first reproted that the Roudabout Theatre is still planning on doing a new production of the classic musical, even after Emma Stone dropped out. (Anne Hathaway was also linked at one point, but her rep quickly shot that rumor down.)
The site reports that Williams, who recently earned an Oscar nod for playing Marilyn Monroe in My Week With Marilyn, is “definitely” going to play Sally Bowles. That’s the role that won Liza Minnelli her Oscar for the 1972 Bob Fosse film.
Two theater executives also confirmed the casting to The New York Times. However, since the Roundabout hasn’t made an official announcement, the sources remained anonymous.
“We’ll be announcing information shortly, which will also be on roundabouttheatre.org,” the Roundabout told the Times.
Cabaret was last staged to great success on Broadway in 1998 with Alan Cumming in the famous MC role. Cumming is expected to return, along with director Sam Mendes and co-director/choreographer Rob Marshall.
The Roundabout is expected to start performances early next year. Cabaret was first staged in 1966 with music by John Kander, lyrics by Fred Ebb and book by Joe Masteroff.
Williams was recently seen in Oz The Great and Powerful and was also nominated for Oscars for her roles in Blue Valentine and Brokeback Mountain.
