NASA decided to create an Instagram account on Friday.
"We're constantly looking to expand our social media portfolio to include tools that will best tell NASA's story of exploration and discovery," NASA Press Secretary Lauren Worley said in a statement, Venturebeat reports.
"Instagram has a passionate following of users who are hungry for new and exciting photos. We believe we have some of the most engaging images on and off the planet - and we can't wait to engage with Instagrammers."
Their Instagram account already has five posts and over 25,000 followers.
Los Angeles Times reports that NASA's first posted picture that was taken from Apollo 11 in July 1969. Then they later posted a never before seen picture of the dark side of the moon.
NASA joining Instagram Friday is purposeful as the agency is trying to create anticipation for its latest lunar mission LADEE, set for 8:27 PDT.
NASA's social media Manager John Yembrick told the L.A. Times that they'll "be covering a full spectrum of NASA activities." NASA plans to upload new photos everyday including in-depth captions.
The LADEE launch can be watched here.
