NBC has announced this afternoon that it is scrapping its planned Hillary Clinton miniseries, which was set to star Diane Lane as the former Secretary of State and First Lady. The move comes just hours after CNN announced its decision to cancel its documentary. Both projects were set to air in 2014.
“After reviewing and prioritizing our slate of movie/miniseries development, we’ve decided that we will no longer continue developing the Hillary Clinton miniseries,” NBC said in a statement today, reports The Hollywood Reporter.
Earlier today, CNN Films confirmed that it will not move forward with its documentary on Clinton’s life and career after director Charles Ferguson (Inside Job) announced in a Huffington Post oped that he was not going to make the film. CNN respected his decision and said that it will not find a replacement.
The NBC series was the network’s marquee announcement at the Television Critics Association Press Tour event this summer and later said that it would air long before the 2016 presidential race. But the project came under attack from both sides of the aisle, especially from Republicans, who threatened to shut NBC out of the GOP presidential debates.
NBC Entertainment Chairman Bob Greenblatt later stressed that the project was in the early development stages and that it might not even happen. The Clinton series would have run four episodes and Courtney Hunt (Frozen River) was hired to write.
Now, it looks like Lane has an a clear schedule. She is likely to reprise her role as Martha Kent in the Man of Steel sequel.
