The Cannes Film Festival can feel so long ago, but in reality, it was just a few months ago that The Weinstein Company was talking up Grace of Monaco, the Grace Kelly biopic starring Nicole Kidman in the title role. It sounded like sure-fire Oscar bait, similar to 2012’s The Iron Lady. But it turns out that TWC must not be very confident in its chances and is reportedly pushing the film back until next spring.
The Hollywood Reporter confirmed that the film will not get released until spring 2014. That means that TWC isn’t going to be trying to get Oscar gold for Kidman this year and is instead looking for it to be a commercial hit.
Grace sounded like an interesting project and Harvey Weinstein and Kidman were so excited about it in Cannes back in May. A clip from the film, directed by Olivier Dahan, didn’t really impress, but TWC soldiered on and set it for an Oscar-qualifying Nov. 27 release. The first trailer was just released earlier this month.
According to EW, TWC said that the film isn’t completed yet, but offered no further comment.
TWC, which has distributed two of the past three Best Picture winners (The King’s Speech in 2010 and The Artist in 2011), still has a few Oscar contenders this year. Lee Daniels’ The Butler and August: Osage County are its most high-profile awards contenders this year.
