New York Police Department cops accidentally shot two bystanders while attempting to subdue an unarmed man behaving wildly in an intersection.
The officers attempted to subdue the man who “was blocking traffic and appeared to be attempting to be hit by cars when an officer on foot patrol attempted to take him into custody in the intersection,” Police Commissioner, Raymond Kelly says.
The New York Daily News reported an officer fired the first shot after the deranged man “reached into his pocket, took out his hand, and simulated as if he was shooting at them.” Another officer fired two more erratic shots.
Two women were injured: a 54-year-old woman struck in the leg, and a 35-year-old woman struck in the buttocks, CBS New York reports.
A video taken by a bystander shows the man in a green sweatshirt and grey shorts surrounded by cops. When one cop attempted to cut him off, he hurled him into the side of a parked car and tried to run before falling to the ground.
